Pet insurance comes with a number of pawesome benefits and one of them is coverage for veterinary X rays and radiology. Read on to find out about Oneplan Pet Insurance and our cover benefits.
One of the most common diagnostic imaging tests for a sick pet is a veterinary X ray. This is because X rays allow your vet to investigate illnesses and injuries in a non-invasive way.
Veterinary X rays are ideal for enabling your vet to visualise the bones, stomach, intestines, and any abnormal fluid in your pet’s body. These imaging tests help your vet to rule out any possible medical issues that might be causing the problem as your vet will get an inside look at what internal structures are normal.

What do veterinary X rays cost?
Whether an X ray is needed as a result of an unexpected emergency (for example, your pet is hit by a car and you need to rush her to the vet) or the imaging test is scheduled ahead of time, you can expect to pay anywhere from R2000 to R5000 for an X ray for your pet. But this will depend on your vet and your pet’s medical condition.

Does pet insurance include cover for X rays?
The good news is that Oneplan Pet Insurance includes veterinary X ray cover.
If the X rays are done as part of a vet visit (out of hospital) then it will be covered under vet visit cover. If the X rays are part of a valid hospital claim, then the cost of these will be included in the applicable accident or illness cover.
Let’s look at an example…
If Bruno is limping and you take him to the vet to have X rays done to determine the cause, then this will be seen as part of consultation costs and will be classified under a vet visit. This means you need to have vet visits as a benefit on your chosen pet insurance plan.
If Bruno is involved in an accident and is admitted into the hospital to have X rays and surgery, then these costs will be covered under accident cover.

Did you know that X rays were first discovered in 1895? But why do they exist, and why does my vet need to take an X ray?
When your pet is sick or injured, your vet will need to take a closer look using medical imaging to find the exact cause of our pet’s health issue or the extent of damage from an accident.
What are X rays?
X rays are a form of medical imaging that allows your vet to take pictures of the insides of your pet in order to diagnose an issue.
A major advantage of medical imaging is that the procedure is non-invasive, meaning that your vet does not need to make an incision to produce the image.
X rays are not the only forms of medical imaging – ultrasounds, MRI, and CT Scans are also forms of medical imaging. Each with their own use and purpose.
X rays are particularly helpful for diagnosing pneumonia, fractures, and arthritis. However, X rays cannot detect all conditions and diseases, which is why your vet might recommend other imaging types.
Is the radiation harmful to my pet?
Your pet is only exposed to a very small amount of radiation during the X rays, and this is harmless.
Will my pet need sedation or anaesthesia?
This will depend on how nervous our pet is during the procedure. For veterinary X rays, your vet might not need to sedate your pet, unless he or she is in pain or anxious.
For MRI and CT scans, then your vet is most likely to use anaesthesia. This is because it’s important for your pet to remain completely still during these tests.

Can I go to any vet for X rays?
Unlike other insurers, we do not limit you to a specified network of vets, meaning you can go to any vet of your choice. You might need to phone ahead of time to ensure your vet can conduct the X rays at their rooms or if you will need to go to an animal hospital for them.
If you and your furry member of the family are part of our Oneplan then we pay you before you see the vet. We make this possible through our unique Oneplan Claim Card claims system. Before you see the vet, simply preload your claim on the Oneplan app and we will preload the funds needed onto your Oneplan Claim Card for you to swipe at your vet’s rooms.
Did we mention we also have one of the highest annual limits compared to other pet insurers? This means our coverage is incredibly extensive and covers some incredibly high vet bills.
