Do you need car insurance before you buy a car?

Buying a car is a thrilling experience. You hunt down the perfect vehicle for you and your budget and then finally find your dream car! But the question a lot of people wonder about is, do you need car insurance before you purchase the car?

A lot of time and thought goes into buying a new car. You think of everything you need; a hatchback vs an SUV, a pre-loved car or something brand new, a bright colour vs something more subtle. There’s so much you need to think about.

One thing that may not be as fun and exciting to think about is your insurance policy. Do you already have a car insurer? Have you told them you are getting a new car? Have you even given insurance a thought?

Take it from us, car insurance is SO important and you’ll need it earlier than you think.

Do you need car insurance before buying a car?

The simple answer is: yes. You HAVE to have car insurance in South Africa if you finance your car through a bank. If you’re lucky enough to buy the car cash, then you can buy it without insurance (we still don’t recommend skipping the insurance though).

You actually aren’t allowed to drive your car out of the showroom if you can’t prove that you have car insurance cover in place for that vehicle. You never know what could happen when you drive away from the car dealership, so the bank wants to know that you and your car are protected.

If you already have car insurance, make sure you contact your insurer to let them know that you’re purchasing a new car and give them all the new details. As much as car insurance is seen as a grudge purchase, you’ll be thanking your lucky stars that you have it in the event of an accident or theft. Plus, some car insurance companies make it less of a grudge purchase like Oneplan (hint, hint).

Here’s why you need Oneplan Insurance for Your Car

Many of us purchase a car by financing it through a bank or some other type of lender, and the majority of them insist on comprehensive car insurance. They need to make sure you and your car are fully protected.

Comprehensive insurance covers you from roof to tyre, with benefits including:

  • Accidents
  • Fire
  • Theft
  • Acts of god/nature
  • Third party liability cover

At Oneplan, we strive to ensure that you are covered (with no sneaky T&Cs). Our Car Insurance is ALWAYS comprehensive and you won’t lose out on third-party and liability cover.

You can control your policy

A fabulous reason you should insure your car with Oneplan is that you have full control over your policy. When have you ever heard an insurer say that?

We offer you a policy that gives you the flexibility you need to manage your cover as well as your budget. No strings attached. Our lives change rapidly so your car insurance should be able to change with you.

How it works is you control your excess using a sliding scale. That means you have the option to either make your excess higher or lower which, in turn, affects the amount on your monthly premiums.

No vehicle inspections

Yep, we allow you to simply snap and upload images or a video of your vehicle to validate your insurance.

We understand that you’re busy and you have better things to do than trying to get to your insurer for a vehicle inspection.

Our car inspections are simple as 1, 2, 3, cheese!

Simple claiming

As we said, we know you’re busy and the last thing you want to do, especially in the event of a stressful situation, is sit around trying to figure out insurance paperwork or sit on a never-ending phone call.

Making a claim shouldn’t be more stressful than the accident or theft that you may have just experienced. We make claiming for your car as easy as it can be. You can seamlessly make all your claims using our app. Simply fill in a few details and snap pics of your vehicle and the accident or theft scene for us to process your claim for you.

This is a little bit of an over-explanation simply stating that, yes, you really need insurance BEFORE purchasing a car (whether you’re financing it or paying for it in cash). You never know what could happen, so why risk your beautiful new set of wheels (and your safety) by opting to skip on comprehensive cover?
