How can I help you? A day in the life of a Oneplan Provider Relations Manager

Oneplan Provider Relations Manager Daniela

An exciting behind-the-scenes look at the people who work hard to keep your pet happy, healthy and protected.

We believe that we are only as good as the people that work with us - which means we’re pretty fantastic - if we do say so ourselves. We thought it was about time we took some time to get to know the faces behind the Muddy Puppy Events, charity functions, vet visits, and so much more

What does it take to be a Oneplan Provider Relations Manager? We’re glad you asked. It takes hours of driving around major cities, meeting new vets every day, keeping up relationships with animal clinics and other pet healthcare professionals in communicating the Oneplan way and policy information so that everybody is on the same page.

And so, we decided to ask some questions to one of our hardworking service providers to help you get to know the team!

First up is Daniela Maia. Let’s dive right in, shall we?

Q: Tell us a bit about yourself

A: I grew up in the south of Johannesburg and I am the only child in my large Portuguese family. I studied Zoology at UJ and did my Honours in Marine Biology at Rhodes University.

I carry a metallic straw everywhere I go and I am obsessed with crime documentaries.

Q: What made you choose to work for Oneplan?

A: I really love to interact with people and wanted a hands-on position, so this was perfect. The bonus was being able to work with animals all day every day! I have been working for Oneplan for about 2 years now although it feels like I started just yesterday.

Q: What does the typical day look like in the life of a Oneplan Provider Relations Manager?

A: A typical day involves meeting new people in the veterinary world and building trusting and long-lasting relationships with all our valued service providers. We assist our providers with understanding how our product works, provide training for their teams, assist clients with their queries and supply practices with brochures, claim forms and other informative material.

The main goal of any Oneplan Provider Relations Manager is to be helpful and make the lives of our service providers much easier.

Q: What do you love most about what you do?

I love being able to see an animal get the medical treatment that it needs because our clients made the best decision and became responsible pet owners. I’m also quite a science nerd, so I love it when some service providers take time to show me what is currently under their microscope or gives a tour of their practice and allows me to sit in or view minor procedures, it’s absolutely fascinating.

Q: In working in conservation, what do you think people should know about this field of work?

A: I think that this field does not get the recognition that it should. I think that in most countries conservation of wildlife and habitats is pretty much last on the country's budget and people that work in this field are not considered. This industry is just as important as any other field of work in fact, without it many other fields of work would not have even existed.

Q: What current passion projects are you working on?

A: I have been planning on working with welfare organisations to help get more senior dogs adopted as well as encourage more pet owners to bring in their animals to become superhero blood donors for practices. I am also working on my marine blog where I touch on the marine life that we find along our shores and the effects of urbanisation on ecosystems.

Q: In your experience, what would you like people to know about the benefits of pet insurance?

A: To be frank, having pet insurance can be that fine line between saving your animal’s life or having to hesitate, panic, search for funds and in some cases, opt for economic euthanasia. Which no pet parent should have to do due to a lack of funds.

With pet insurance, I think it also encourages pet parents to be more proactive with their pet’s health and overall well-being and who wouldn’t want a happy animal?

Q: What makes Oneplan Pet Insurance different to the other insurers out there?

A: We make the lives of our clients and service providers simpler by providing funds upfront for clients for their out of hospital benefits. We do not have sub limits and our annual limits are much higher than other insurers out there. Our Oneplan App is also unique in allowing the client to control their policy from the palm of their hands. We also try to work closely with our service providers to understand how we can adapt and make new changes that will be able to make every step of claiming, stress-free. We also offer the option to pay providers directly, should they accept this option.

Q: In dealing with vets, how have you witnessed the difference that pet insurance can make for a pet parent?

A: I have witnessed plenty of stressful and emotional moments in this line of work. Vets are under constant pressure whether it be emotional or financial. Every day they are faced with cases where pet owners are not in a financial position to pay for the necessary treatment and every day they have to look into those animals’ eyes and make the toughest decision that could have been avoided if pet health insurance had been a decision prior.

The amount of emotional stress that is avoided between both vet and pet parent with pet insurance is unreal. Pet insurance removes restriction and allows the vet the freedom to give the best treatment possible for good ol’ Fluffy.

Q: In your opinion, do you think pet insurance makes financial sense?

I often hear people say that it’s better just to put that money away into a savings account each month. I don’t know about you, but I think that is much easier said than done. Even if one decides to put away roughly R400 a month (which is roughly how much one would pay for our Pet Super Plan) for a year, one would still not come close to having enough to cover Fluffy’s chemotherapy or back operation. With pet insurance, you will be able to have access to higher coverage should anything happen.

Q: In working with vets, what would you say are the main reasons why pet parents visit the vet?

A: I have seen a lot of parvovirus cases, cruciate repairs, and back operations stumble through many practices’ doors. Vaccinations are also one of the main reasons. Here at Oneplan, we understand the importance of vaccinations which is why we offer annual vaccination cover in our routine care benefit which is already included under our Classic Plan and Super Plan.

Q: When you are not working - what do you like to do for fun?

A: Now that I have moved to Cape Town I often volunteer at Marine NPO’s, love to snorkel and also take advantage of all the beautiful hikes around me.

Q: Anything else you would like to share or have pet parents/readers know about you, Oneplan or your job?

A: Pet insurance is really the most responsible thing to do if you are a pet parent and Oneplan is here to help you every step of the way. One paw at a time.
