What’s covered, what’s not and what you need to know about hospital cover for your pet’s medical needs with Oneplan Pet Insurance. Oh, and did we mention you can add on day-to-day benefits too? Here are all the juicy details.

Alright then, so our guess is that you are reading this article because you are interested in purchasing a hospital plan for your furry member of the family. If this is the case, then kudos to you. Purchasing a pet insurance plan is one of the most responsible and financially-savvy decisions you can make for both you and your pet. Not only will this save you from some rather steep and unexpected costs, but pet insurance gives you the peace of mind you need in knowing your pet’s health is taken care of when it really matters.

So, without further adieu, let’s dig into the facts on pet hospital plans, what they cover, what they don’t and whether this is the right plan for you and your precious pet.

What is a pet hospital plan?

Now, before we get into the juicy details (can you tell we’re pretty passionate about pet insurance?), we first need to make it clear that no insurer is created equal. This means that what we classify as a pet hospital plan might be slightly different from that of another insurer. Our benefits, coverage details and other pawsome facts on our pet insurance are likely to differ from other pet hospital plans. Which means that what you read here only applies to Oneplan (that’s us).

Alright then, now that we have the nitty-gritty out of the way, let’s dig in!

Basically a pet hospital plan helps shoulder the costs of accidents and illnesses which land your pet in the hospital, as well as emergency kennel and boarding fees should something happen to you and you are unable to care for your pet due to unexpected hospitalisation.

Our pet hospital plan is a bump up from our pet accident plan - an accident-only plan covers pretty much what you think it does - accidents. However, the great thing about our pet accident plan is that it also covers burial/cremation (head’s up - these costs are only covered from pet death due to an accidental event, for example, if your pet dies from an illness the costs are not covered for cremation or euthanasia, ONLY from an accident), and there are no age limits that apply.

We digress. Getting back to the point, a pet hospital plan is a great option if you are looking for a little more cover than an accident-plan only but you’re not seeking something as comprehensive as our Classic or Super plans.

Who is a pet hospital plan suited to?

In leading on from our previous sentence, a pet hospital plan is ideally suited to healthy pets who don’t necessarily have too many health risks (whether existing or predicted due to age or breed). However, we can’t tell you what kind of cover is best suited to your pet.

The final decision is yours to make. It will depend on a number of factors such as your budget and your pet’s healthcare needs. We always suggest that our clients have a chat with their vet for them to get a professional opinion on the healthcare needs and financial implications unique to their pet.

What does a pet hospital plan cost?

Please note that these prices are reflective of the date that this article was written. For up to date pricing, please click on this link.

A maximum of 8 pets is allowed per policy.

You will receive a 10% discount on the second pet added to your policy and a 15% discount for the third and any additional pets added.

What does a pet hospital plan cover?

We cover accidents, illnesses that require admission to hospital, and kennel cover.

Accidents: Up to R35 000 per event.

“Accident” means a sudden, unexpected, unforeseen, unusual, unintended event which occurs at a specific time and place causing injury to your Pet (it’s the stuff you don’t see coming), the result of which requires immediate medical attention to your Pet.

“Illness” means any unforeseen sickness, illness or disease originating, contracted, commencing or first manifesting itself during the period of insurance - something that started after your cover began.

What about excesses?

An excess is the amount of money you have to pay in for a claim.

An excess of 25% applies for the first 6 months of your policy, from month 7 onwards, an excess percentage of 10% applies.

BUT! Before you start to freak out over an excess getting the better of you, should you want us to waive all in-hospital excess fees, you can purchase our unique product known as our Excess Buster. For only R20 extra a month, we will waive all excess fees charged by us for in-hospital claims.

What does a pet hospital plan NOT cover?

A hospital plan does not cover day-to-day costs such as vet visits and routine care. However, thanks to our Routine Care Plus benefit, for only R35 extra a month per pet, you will receive an additional R350 in cover for routine care after a 6 month waiting period. This includes our Excess Buster benefit and the great part about our Routine Care Plus Benefit is that there is no waiting period on the excess waiver.

A pet hospital plan is an affordable form of pet insurance that gives your pet access to expert care and gives you peace of mind.

How do I claim for hospital cover?

  1. To claim you must submit a fully completed claim form and attach a copy of the detailed account, medical evidence and/or any other information as we may reasonably request.
  2. Submit the information to claims@oneplan.co.za for assessment and processing.
  3. We may request a full twenty-four-month medical history for your pet to process your claim.

Each hospital event forms part of your annual limit (the max amount we pay per year) and may not be used in conjunction with any other cover in this policy.
