How do I get my car insurance down?
Car insurance is a must-have for anyone who owns a car and lives in South Africa. But it can often be difficult to afford and work into your monthly budget. Here are 6 simple hacks to reducing your monthly premium and not sacrificing on cover…
Owning a car is one of the most expensive investments someone can make - which is why it pays to have cover for the things we don’t see coming, like accidents, bumper bashings, theft and fire.
Anyone who lives in South Africa knows the dangers of driving on our roads, from potholes and taxis - each time we get behind the wheel, we are taking a risk.
But, how can you save a little extra a month on vehicle insurance? We have put together a list of our top 6 hacks to saving money on your monthly premium…
1. Make sure your cover is comprehensive
Having comprehensive car insurance (which is the highest level of cover you can get) means that you are covered for theft, third party, fire and damage done to your own car in the event of an accident.
Although this does not necessarily save you money every month, it will MOST CERTAINLY save you money in the event of a claim.
The thing is, if you only have third party cover, then this does not cover the costs of damage done to your own car. This means that YOU HAVE TO PAY for this damage.
At Oneplan, we love to make sure our clients are covered with comprehensive vehicle insurance. This means that you are covered for the expected, unexpected, and everything in between.
W let you choose how much cover you want at the price you can afford using our awesome cover slider. Meaning you can tailor your insurance to your exact needs and budget.
2. Get in touch with us to update your details
We love to hear from you and catching up. Which is why it is important to make sure your details are always updated on our system.
If you have recently moved to a new area, upgraded your car or your security - we want to know.
Did you know that certain areas are classified as a higher risk than others? This means that if you live in a neighbourhood where there is less theft, your premium will be lower than if you lived in a high-risk area.
3. Get security
If your car is parked in a locked garage at night, or you live in a secure complex, house or estate with walls and electric fencing or maybe you even have a guard, then these are all factors that can decrease your premium.
Make sure that if you have good security at your home, you let us know about it!
If you have recently installed beams, an electric fence or another security item, then give us a call and we will update your details accordingly.
4. Install a tracking device
Having a tracking device installed in your car will decrease your monthly premium.
There are a number of different and affordable car tracking devices available, just do some digging and see what you find.
Head’s up - different insurers will only accept certain brands. So make sure you check with your insurer to see what brands they accept and if your premium will, in fact, decrease because of this.
5. Complete an advanced driving course
The better you drive, the less of a risk you are to insure. Better drivers are less likely to be involved in accidents that are their fault, which means you might pay less in your monthly premium.
Chat with your insurer and check if this will bring down your monthly premium should you complete a recognised advanced driving course.
6. Don’t claim for the small stuff
Small dents and scratches are not always worth claiming for. Remember, the more you claim the more your monthly premium will be.
Some small damage costs are better off paid out of your own pocket.
And don’t forget to check what your excess is for a claim as it may not be worth claiming if your excess is quite high.
Get in touch
If you want to know exactly how to bring down your policy and what factors might be costing you more than you think in your current policy, the best thing to do is to get in touch with your insurer. They can tell you exactly why your premium costs the amount it does.
