Are you an insurance newbie who’s not sure what to do next? Come with us, we’ve got you covered!
You’ve just joined the Oneplan Pet Family (or you’re still on the fence – and that’s okay!) and you’re wondering where to start. What you need is a beginners guide to pet insurance.
Luckily, insurance with us is as simple as can be. We pride ourselves on being open and transparent, with insurance policies that are jargon-free and easy to understand.
Today you’re going to learn all the ins and outs of Oneplan Pet Insurance to make sure you’re making the absolute most of your policy!
A Beginners Guide to Your Cover
Paying with your Oneplan Claim Card
When you sign up with us, you’ll have your very own Oneplan Claim Card delivered to you.
Before you get confused on how to use it, allow us to give you a beginners guide on using your card. Oneplan pays you before you see the vet, and you need a Oneplan Claim Card so we can do just that.
It’s almost too easy to be true. Once you’ve scheduled your visit to the vet, you log in to the Oneplan App. Once you’re in, you submit your claim on your pet’s profile.
The funds are then sent to your Oneplan Claim Card. After your appointment, you’ll swipe your card the same way you would your debit card. Won’t it feel good not having to hear that annoying bank notification? Because for once, you’re not paying out of pocket.
Pet Med Savings
You would be mistaken if you thought pet insurance was just about in-hospital bills. We don’t blame you, the majority of pet insurance works that way.
With Oneplan, you’re covered for the day-to-day costs of being a fantastic pet parent. Pet Med Savings can be added to our Hospital Plan. These benefits are included automatically in the Primary Plan, Classic Plan and Super Plan.
Pet Med Savings protects you from costs like voluntary sterilisation, deworming, dental care, vaccinations and so much more.
This kind of cover falls under routine care and will cover you for events that don’t fall under casualty.

Casualty cover when you need it most.
For claims that do fall under casualty, we have Pawsualty for Pets. This means you’re covered for visits to the vet that do not require hospital admission (which is always good news).

Waiting periods and pre-existing conditions
Don’t get stuck in the awkward position of claiming for something straight off the bat without looking at the waiting periods and pre-existing conditions in your policy. Here’s a beginners guide to waiting periods.
A waiting period is the set amount of time that must pass between your furry friend’s inception date and the claim in question. For example, the waiting period for visiting the vet is 30 days. From the time when you sign the dotted line (digitally, of course) you have a full 30 days to wait before you can claim for a visit to the vet. Waiting periods can also exist between claims of the same nature. If you claim for a vet visit, you need to wait 14 days before you can claim for another one.
We aren’t bragging when we tell you what other insurers don’t do – we’re just making sure you know what’s out there! Most insurers won’t cover pre-existing conditions. On a Oneplan Pet Policy we will cover your pet’s pre-existing condition on ONE condition:
You need to wait for 12 months.
It’s not long, in the wider scheme of things. It would be a far longer and more troubling journey to go the remainder of your dog’s life paying for an expensive condition out of pocket.
Tail-o-made policies for you and your pet
There’s one thing we’re sure of: we definitely aren’t a “one-size-fits-all” kind of insurance company. All four of our pet policies can be adjusted to suit your needs and the wellbeing of your pet.
Excess Buster
Excess is normal in insurance, so it’s best to get familiar. Excess is the agreed-upon amount that you pay towards a claim and your insurer covers the rest.
For as little as the cost of a cup of coffee, you can add the Excess Buster to your policy. That means you ultimately pay no excess on in-hospital claims.
Pet Med Booster
Do you predict that your precious pet could do with more routine care cover? Do you want more day-to-day cover in your life? No problem.
Simply add Pet Med Booster to your plan (again, for a super small fee) and receive hundreds of rands more in annual routine cover.
