No one really feels like renewing their car license every year, but car license renewal is just something we have to do. Renewing your car license is just one of those minor inconveniences that feels massive.
That’s why we’ve put together some top tips that will make sure you have all the relevant documentation and some insight into renewing your license online.
Let’s d(r)ive right in:
A little bit about car license renewal
As a vehicle owner, it’s your responsibility to renew your vehicle license every year before the expiry date. Luckily, you do have 21 days from the date that your current license expires to renew it at a registering authority, at your local post office, or online.
Renewing Your Vehicle License On-Site
Before you head out to renew your license, make sure you have all the relevant documents and information to avoid wasting your time. Here are the documents needed to renew your car license:
- Your ID book or card.
- Proof of residential address such as a utility bill (with affidavit if someone else’s name is on the bill).
- Motor vehicle license renewal notice (MVL2) or ALV1 (Application for Licensing of Motor Vehicle) form.
- Cash to pay for the license.
Renewing your vehicle license at the post office or a registered facility doesn’t save you from standing in lengthy queues, unfortunately, but we hope this little checklist will at least keep you from wasting your time.
Renewing your car license online
This is where things get a little better. Renewing your license online is the best way to save time, avoid wasting your leave days, and save your Saturdays from endless queues.
There are various reliable websites that can assist you. An example of this is Licence ZA. Licence ZA helps people in Gauteng pay for their car license online and have it delivered right to them for a small fee. They charge a service fee of R230 that includes the admin and delivery fee.
NaTIS (National Traffic Information System) has also launched an online license disk renewal service. It works like this:
What you’ll need:
- A digital copy of your I.D.
- Your personal information such as your address.
- Permission letter, if applying for someone else.
What you need to do:
- Register on the NaTIS website.
- Select ‘View Motor Renewals’.
- Choose the license disc/car.
- Capture card details of the respective bank and pay.
- Once you’ve made the payment, you can either have the license disc couriered to you or get it printed at the nearest Driver License Testing Centre.
You can also renew your license on the Pick n Pay License Renewal Online Portal no matter where you are in SA, but you will then need to collect your license in-store rather than having it delivered directly to you.
As a responsible vehicle owner, renewing your car license is just one of those things you’ve got to do. Just like renewing your driver’s license, obeying the rules of the road, and having adequate car insurance.
