Saving money in 2021: pet insurance that takes care of the bill

Saving money in 2021

It’s coming into the second month of the year and fortunately, with the Oneplan Pet Insurance team on hand (that’s us),  it really isn’t too late to make this year a financially secure one!

Some of us will have memories of a tired grownup sternly rejecting our Christmas puppy request because “we just weren’t ready for the responsibility”. Back then, the reasoning seemed bizarre - what responsibility goes into a pet besides the fun stuff? Well, if you’re a pet owner now, you’ll know that the serious stuff comes into play quickly. When you decide to bring a furry little homie into your home, you’re bringing home a significant responsibility for their wellbeing, happiness and health.

Responsibility, however, doesn’t mean you need to do it alone. It just means you need to know your options and choose the best one for you and your pet!

The cost of a pet

Even a healthy pet can be expensive - from routine checks ups to dental cleaning and let’s not forget the toys, treats (what is up with the price of dog food??) and snuggly things.  What becomes even more expensive, is when a healthy pet becomes suddenly and unexpectedly ill - whether that be due to illness or accident. Just as humans run into things and fall from things and eat things they shouldn’t, the chances of your dog or cat doing the same thing are pretty high and the medical bills have similar prices.

For example, one of our most common claims happens to be Foreign Body Surgery, which is an emergency surgery for when your pet swallows something they shouldn’t have. This procedure can range between R12 000 and R20 000. That was a very expensive old tennis ball Fluffy decided to feast on. If a leg is broken and needs repair, a bill of R15 000 isn’t uncommon. The point is, with a pet in the house you need to anticipate that big costs could come at a moment's notice, and we would prefer you to be prepared.

The price of pet insurance

With Oneplan, affordability is always at the forefront of the decisions we make regarding our policies. Looking after your furry family members should be simple, accessible and comprehensive (we’d like to think we hit the mark on all three).

You can take a look at our paw-some pet insurance plans and the details of each in this blog.

We have plans that are tail-o-made to you and your pets. You could choose our most affordable Hospital Plan from R60 pm that covers you for unexpected accidents up to R8000 per annum, or if you want something completely comprehensive, our Oneplan Pet Classic Plan family are covered for routine care, veterinary visits, accidents and illnesses from R269 pm. We also cover those pesky last-minute kennel fees for when you fall ill.

Whichever policy works best for you, there is one thing that stays the same: you won’t pay out of pocket after your visit to the vet. Oneplan do claims differently, fronting you with cash before your appointment. Simplicity and technology make us excited, so our Oneplan App and Onecard work together to bring you insurance so convenient it’s scary. You can find out more about loading funds and paying with your Onecard here.

The cost of not having pet insurance

This one is pretty simple: not having pet insurance could potentially cost a ridiculous amount like R40 000 in the blink of an eye (believe us, we have the claims to prove it). Without pet insurance, that bill falls entirely onto you and will need to be paid timeously to make sure your pet gets the healthcare they deserve.

Our people are pet people and we know that as a pet owner, you only want the best for your pup or feline friend. If you like the sound of how we can work for you to make sure you don’t have to make any difficult choices during difficult times, get in touch with one of our consultants or get a live quote here.

Yours in paws
