Easy Tips To Make The Interior Of Your Car Cleaner Than Ever: 9 Simple Steps

Jade Poole from I Write Words

Keeping the inside of your car clean can often seem like an ongoing job, especially if you have kids (or pets). Finding the time to do a proper clean is not easy, but luckily, cleaning your car’s interior is now easier than ever thanks to this helpful list of hacks…

Did you know that South Africans spend more than 100 hours in traffic every year?

According to the stats from Inrix Global Traffic Scorecard, these numbers are actually between 119 and 162 hours. That’s high!

This means that we spend more time in our cars than we think, they are basically our second homes, which is why it’s important for our car’s interior to be clean, to make our time spent in traffic a little less painful.

1. Start with the trash

Before you get the vacuum involved, you need to clear out all the trash. Check under the seats, in the seat cracks, in the seat pockets and toss out anything your vacuum can’t handle.

A great tip is to keep a plastic shopping bag in your car for litter and then recycle this after using it. That way you can keep all the trash in your car in one bag.

2. Shake the mats

Take the floor mats out of your car and shake them off as much as you can.

This will make the vacuuming easier.

After you have vacuumed these, then scrub them with soap and hot water and wait for them to dry completely before placing them back in your car.

3. Grab the vacuum!

Vacuum the back and front seats, the floor and the boot of your car.

Vacuum every area you can and using the nozzle of your vacuum. Don’t forget about the space along the side of the door panels.

4. Use a rag or cloth for wiping

Now that you have vacuumed your car, grab a rag and spray this with some car-specific cleaner. Be sure to wipe off all the dust, dirt and any sticky marks.

Wipe your dashboard, centre console, steering wheel, and between the seats.

Using a car-specific product will ensure your car looks like new after a good wipe.

5. Don’t forget about the cup holders

While wiping, don’t forget to clean out your cup holders.

Did you know that cup holders are host to dead  skin cells, hairs and all sorts of bacteria and germs?

Grab an earbud to get into the little places a rag won't reach.

6. Clean the windows

Using a window cleaning solution, spray this onto your windows (the inside of the windows) and wipe them clean with a microfibre cloth or paper towel.

You’ll be surprised at the difference this can make.

7. Dig into the stains

If there are any steans in your carpets or seats, use a stain remover to spray onto these and let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes.

Then, using warm water and a cloth, wipe them clean.

8. Get rid of any pet fur

If you have pets, then you will know what it’s like to deal with their fur.

In some cases, a vacuum will not remove all the fur. You can use a lint roller to get rid of it or masking tape. Simply wrap your hand in masking tape (sticky side out) and wipe your seats and carpets with it.

9. Get that fresh smell

Now that you have given your car a good cleaning, pop into your local grocery store and buy a car air freshener.

You can also make your own…

Mix one cup of baking soda with a few drops of your favourite essential oil (lavender or mint are great options).

Place the oil and the baking soda in a sealable plastic bag or a glass jar for 24 hours.

After this time has passed, shake up the mixture and sprinkle it onto the floor of your car and leave it for 30 minutes.

Then vacuum it up and your car will be left smelling wonderfully clean and fresh.
