Health insurance guide for beginners: Everything you need to know
Getting started with health insurance may seem like a daunting and confusing task. No one teaches you anything about this so how are you meant to know what it all means? What do you even need? Don’t fret, this beginner’s guide will leave you feeling confident about all things health insurance.
Insurance jargon like deductibles, premiums and actions like making claims or even choosing the right insurance plan… These things almost make you not want to even start the process of getting insurance.
Getting the right health insurance cover might seem a little daunting at first but we can assure you that by the end of this guide, you’ll be a health insurance pro!
What is health insurance?
To put it plainly, health insurance is a type of insurance coverage that covers the cost of any medical and/or surgical expenses that you may incur.
Health insurance protects you from the financial burdens that relate to your health. From dental work to optometrists, Oneplan’s health insurance covers it all.
Is medical insurance really necessary?
The short answer is YES!
You might be thinking, “I’m young and my definition of a health emergency has been a few colds and flu here and there so what’s the point?”
We understand that health insurance may seem like an unnecessary expense right now but we can guarantee that it’s a necessity. The thing is that you never know what might happen. You could pull a muscle in the gym, fall and really injure yourself on a night out or need medication to help you recover from bad flu or even COVID.
The point is that you should be more focused on the help you’ll need rather than stressing about the cost of it all, that’s what we’re here for.
But what does it all mean?
Now that you’ve decided that it's okay, maybe you do actually need health insurance. But you’ve started the research and realised that there are some words you’ve never heard of before and really don’t know where to start.
Well, a little disclaimed but Oneplan makes sure that all of our insurance policies are easy to understand with no complicated jargon or sneaky Ts & Cs. But before we get there, let’s look at some of the common terms found in most health insurance policies.
Premium - this is the amount you’ll pay monthly for your health insurance. There are many factors that go into how much your premium will be. But keep reading to find out more about health insurance premiums with Oneplan.
Deductibles - Your deductible is the amount of money that you will need to pay before your insurance kicks in. Your insurer will then cover the medical expense at the end. All you need to do is log the claim and we will take it from there!
Copayment - simply put, a copayment or copay is a form of cost-sharing between you and our insurance team. It’s the fixed amount that you will need to pay for specific prescription medication or services and it’s where we will split the cost with you once you have hit your deductible.
Co-insurance - this pretty much works exactly like your co-payment where we split the costs with you. The only major difference is that co-insurance is not a fixed amount. It is actually a percentage. Instead of a fixed amount, you will need to pay a percentage towards covered services.
Claim - this is a request you will make when you need something to be covered by your insurer. You will let them know what the request is, await the approval and then be reimbursed by our team.
