Health Insurance A Simple Definition

You’re probably thinking that the words simple and insurance don’t really go together, right? That’s not the case with Oneplan. We’re giving a simple definition of health insurance and sharing Oneplan’s health insurance secrets.

We know better than most how complicated health insurance can seem. From endless policy documents to complicated jargon and a variety of plans. How do you make heads or tails of all the information in front of you?

Just like our comprehensive and quality insurance policies, we’ve got you covered. We’re diving into what exactly health insurance means, why you need it and how Oneplan does things a little differently.

What is health insurance?

Health insurance (noun):

  • financial coverage against medical expenses incurred due to an accident, illness or injury.
  • something you simply cannot live without.

Medical expenses can become incredibly expensive in the blink of an eye and without warning. You never know when you’re going to need health insurance and the last thing you want is to be without it when the time comes.

Why do you need health insurance?

Health insurance is a form of protection that will help you financially and medically by giving you access to amazing health care benefits. Some of these benefits include:

Access to private healthcare

Many public hospitals in South Africa don’t have the best resources to provide optimal healthcare which is why private hospitals have become such a necessity in this country.

Private hospitals are independent of the government and can be quite costly - if you aren’t covered by a medical aid or health insurer.

Private hospitals provide:

  • Advanced resources and technology
  • Clean rooms and highly trained nursing staff
  • Access to a variety of doctors and specialists
  • Excellent care and service
  • No long lines and immediate emergency care

The cost of these medical facilities is a massive problem which is why having access to health insurance is vital. We know what you’re thinking - “health insurance isn’t cheap either”... Well, with Oneplan, it’s more cost-effective than you think. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves.

Protection against financial loss

As we mentioned, medical emergencies can become incredibly pricey very quickly. When you’re in need of medical treatment, the last thing you need to be stressing about is the toll this will have on your bank account.

You focus on your and your loved one’s health - your health insurer should handle the rest.

Doctor’s checks are covered

Health insurance doesn’t cover you for the big things but the smaller things like regular health checks too.

Rather than trying to suck it up when you’re feeling so ill because you’re worried about how much a visit to the doctor is going to set you back this month.

These are just a few of the reasons why health insurance is a great idea but if you aren’t convinced that health insurance is for you, keep reading…

Our unique health insurance benefits

Among the ‘usual’ health insurance benefits we offer, we have some unique benefits that make Oneplan’s health insurance just a little bit sweeter.

Get money in your pocket BEFORE you see the doctor

When you sign up with us, you’ll get your very own Onecard sent directly to you. You’re the only person who can use this card, but it’s an absolute game-changer.

As we said, we pay you BEFORE you see the doctor. The Onecard is how we make that happen. All you need to do is load a medical claim via the Oneplan App and we’ll send the funds you need to your Onecard. After your appointment, simply swipe your card and voila, you’re done!

Keep track of your policy via the Oneplan App

So we just mentioned the Oneplan App in the cover benefit… Yup, there’s an app for just about anything these days.

Now you can easily get instant access to your insurance policy, chat with our team, submit claims and so much more all from the palm of your hand.

Gain access to routine and day-to-day cover

All 4 of our health insurance plans give you fabulous hospital benefits but you’re also covered for the smaller things.

Day-to-day costs and routine care can empty your pockets pretty quickly which is why our policies make sure you’re covered for that too. Your routine cover will include:

  • Doctor visits
  • Scripted medication
  • Blood tests
  • X-rays
  • Dentistry
  • Optometry
  • Maternity pre-birth

The exact details of this cover are listed in our different plans here.

Family discounts

Health insurance isn’t always an individual thing. As much as you want to protect yourself, your family’s health is a priority too. Oneplan makes health insurance more accessible with awesome family discounts.

If you have a significant other or you’re planning on starting a family, you should check out how you can save money with a Oneplan family discount.

We have a blog that explains the family discount in a little more detail: Health insurance for the whole family (and perhaps a discount, too!)

Keep your doctor - we let you go to the doctor of your choice

Some health insurers love to pick and choose which doctors are available on your health policy but we understand that the relationship with your doctor is important. Many people stay with the same doctor for years on end.

Getting to know a new doctor and sharing all your personal details isn’t easy, especially when you have someone you’re already really comfortable with. This is why we will never force you to change your doctor. You can go to any doctor of your choice (as long as they are a licensed practitioner in the country of South Africa).

That’s health insurance and Oneplan’s health insurance in a nutshell. If you’d like to know more, reach out to us and chat with our team!

Yours in quality and affordable health insurance,
