Bridging the gap with short-term health insurance
And maybe by the end of this blog, you’ll be in it for the long run.
You think that you’ve already done the responsible thing by being on a medical aid scheme and let us just say: yes, you have. Having medical aid is a helpful solution to have financial support should you fall ill or have a terrible (or minor) accident.
Things don’t always go to plan, as we’re sure you know. Before you know it, what started as a minor operation has snowballed into a hefty hospital bill and your medical aid savings have run out. That’s where gap cover comes in.
What is gap cover?
Gap cover is a short-term insurance policy that offers you high-value payouts in the event you have a shortfall in-hospital. Each month you pay a small monthly premium on top of what you pay towards your medical aid. In return, your gap cover will cover what your medical aid doesn’t.
Gap cover is a smart solution to make sure you are covered, even when you’ve already got some cover in place.
Why do you need it?
It’s not just us who suggest you get gap cover, a lot of medical aid schemes will encourage you to do the same. Although medical aid is a very extensive offering and is likely to cover you for expensive treatments or surgeries, your cover is all dependent on your plan.
Your medical aid scheme may offer to pay you out for 100% of your hospital fees, which sounds great right? It is. Medical aid is required by law to cover you for high-cost medical treatments which is why premiums are significantly higher than that of health insurance. It gets tricky, however, when your medical bills go beyond 100%.
Surgeons, anaesthetists and specialists can sometimes charge up to 500% for your treatment. That means you will be liable for the remaining 400%. Yikes. Plus, if you know how difficult it is to get into a private hospital without showing that you have the available funds, you’ll understand why it’s important to show you have gap cover. Whilst some specialists will decide that your medical aid is enough, many will want to see proof of gap cover before they begin treatment. This saves them from starting a procedure and then finding out you don’t have the funds to pay for the rest.
Unless...you have some comprehensive gap cover up your sleeve.
