Road trips can create some of the best memories! Out on the open road with some of your favourite people filled with the excitement of your upcoming holiday. But just as fun as road trips can be, they can also be frustrating if you aren’t prepared and don’t have the essentials for a great trip. We’ve compiled a list of some road trip essentials that you simply cannot go without!
Road trip essentials
From snacks to games to some essentials, our list will ensure that your next road trip is an absolute success!
This one is an obvious one but we can’t tell you how many times we’ve nearly forgotten our driver’s license at home before heading out. Make sure you have your license on you and if you’re sharing the drive with someone, make sure they have theirs too.
There is a high chance you’ll go through some sort of roadblock, especially if you’re travelling during peak season so make sure you’re prepared.
Apart from your driver’s license, snacks are the most important thing for any road trip. What is it about road trips that make you crave random treats?
Even though it’s tempting to stop at a petrol station and load your car with crisps, chocolates and sugary cool drinks, it’s not ideal. The best idea is to pack some nutritious snacks and water to keep you going. Nutritious meals will keep you fuller for longer and help keep your mind alert for the trip.
A couple of sweets and crisps here and there aren’t going to hurt though, and you are on holiday but think about some more sustainable snacks like biltong and fruit.
You never know what could happen while you’re out on the open road and in many cases, if you’re driving a very far distance, you can go for quite a few kilometres with nothing in sight. That’s why it’s a great idea to make sure you have a fully-stocked emergency kit just in case.
These are some items to include in your kit:
- Jumper cables
- Tyre pressure gauges
- Road flares
- Washer fluid
- Plasters, bandages, antiseptic, safety pins and hand sanitiser
Most of us rely on our ATM cards instead of cash nowadays. When you’re on a road trip though, it’s a good idea to have some cash on hand in case you stop somewhere that doesn’t have card facilities or use the cash to pay for toll gates.
Have you ever had to stop at a small petrol station in the middle of nowhere because you needed to use the bathroom so badly only to find that there’s no toilet paper? One of the worst feelings!
To avoid this from happening, keep a little stash of essential toiletries like toilet paper, extra sanitiser and baby wipes. Some bathrooms at stops along the way aren’t the most sanitary so you can use the sanitiser and baby wipes to do a little clean up if you need to.
Empty snack packets and wrappers, petrol receipts and empty water bottles can mount up on a long trip. It’s a great idea to keep an empty bag or something you can throw away after your trip and put all your rubbish in there.
Cleaning the car after your trip will be an absolute breeze!
Make sure you have a spare tyre in the boot of your car. The last thing you want is to get a flat tyre and be stuck on the side of the road (absolute holiday buzz killer). Make sure you’re prepared with a spare tyre, a jack and a tyre lug wrench so that you can easily change a tyre if you need to.
Take a look at how to make sure you’re prepared for a flat tyre here.
Road trips can be long and let’s be honest, they can get a little bit boring after a while.
As the Road Trip Captain (the driver), you should prepare a few playlists for a variety of different vibes. You could have a playlist for a relaxed drive or a playlist to sing along to. You can also make a playlist of podcasts or audiobooks that everyone will enjoy.
Make sure to plan these playlists ahead of the time so you aren’t playing around on your phone while you’re driving.
A fun idea is for passengers to read books, play cards or watch Netflix series downloaded on their phones with earphones in.
If you’re on the road with kids, keep a little box of activities for them from toys to games to keep them entertained along the way.
You can even play car games like ‘I spy’ because car games are for everyone! They’re a great way to pass the time for both adults and children.
This little list of essentials is here to ensure that you have the absolute best time on your road trip with little to worry about and only fun to be had!
