From age limits, upgrading your plan, microchipping and pre-existing conditions, we have the simple answers to the questions you’ve been asking.
The first thing you need to know about our pet insurance is that we do everything we can to make your life easier. From a claims system that is hassle-free and simple, to policy wording documents that are so easy to understand there is no need to whip out the dictionary and spend hours trying to get through the legal lingo.
You see, we get that life is complicated, which is why we do everything in our power to make sure our insurance is easy to understand, easy to use and easy to apply. Giving you more time to focus on the things that really matter, like taking your furry best friend for a walk.
And so, in sticking to our promise, this blog covers some of the frequently asked questions our clients ask us. Without further adieu, let’s grab a cup of tea (or a scrumptious little snack) and dig in!
1. Age limits and pet insurance
What happens when my pet turns 9 years old, will he still be covered by pet insurance?
Great question to start off with!
As you know, the maximum age limit for you to enroll your pet for pet insurance is 9 years old (unless you are purchasing our accident-only plan, we designed this plan to not have any exclusions when it comes to age limits).
But for our other plans, age limits apply. The reason for this is to encourage you to enroll your pet at a young age to ensure you are covered for any unexpected issues that tend to arise later on in your pet’s life. The earlier you purchase pet insurance, the better.
But, if your pet is signed up with a policy with us before he or she reaches the tender age of 9, then your pet is covered with pet care for life on your chosen plan! Which means we all get to grow old together. Which as far as we are concerned, is pretty awesome.

2. Upgrading your plan
Is it possible to upgrade my chosen pet insurance plan at a later stage
Of course it is! We get that life changes, so we want to give you the freedom to adjust your policy when it does.
All you have to do is give us one calendar month’s notice and our team will get cracking on making the changes happen.
To make your life a little easier, you can also request to change your plan type on our smart Oneplan App. After logging in, select My Cover and follow the prompts accordingly.
If you get stuck, you can use our in-app chat function to chat with one of our pet experts to help guide you through whatever you need help with!

3. Vets you can choose from
Is there a specific network of vets I have to choose from?
This is one of our favourite questions because the answer to this is pretty pawesome.
As we mentioned, we try to make your life as simple as possible, which means you give you total freedom to go to ANY licenced vet of our choice. We don’t limit you to a specified network of vets. Meaning you can go to any vet in South Africa and Buster can keep his favourite medical expert.

4. Microchipping your pets
Do I need to microchip my pet in order to qualify for pet insurance?
Firstly, microchipping is advised for all pets. It's a great way for you to locate Whiskers or Busters if they decide to wander about. Meaning you can rest easy knowing they can find their way back to you should a kind stranger find your lost pet and bring them to a vet for their microchip to be scanned.
But you do not have to microchip your pet to qualify for Oneplan pet insurance.
For us to identify your pet, all you need to do is snap a cute selfie of your furry bestie and upload this to the Oneplan App under the My Information section.
5. Waiting periods and pre-existing conditions
Pre-existing, Congenital, Hereditary and specific listed conditions as per policy wording are excluded for 12 months - I cannot wait this long for that to be covered. What can I do?
We get it, 12 months might seem like a really long time to wait before you can claim for these sorts of conditions. But look at it this way, if you did not have pet insurance, the vet bills for these issues would come out of your own pocket for as long as your pet is sick (which could be as long as your pet is alive).
If you have cover with us, then we are one of the few insurers who even include cover for these sort of expensive events. Other insurers think hereditary (conditions prone to a breed) or pre-existing conditions are too much of a high risk to cover.
We, on the other hand, feel that is absolutely necessary for your pet’s health to cover these events as there is a possibility of your fur child ending up with a condition such as hip dysplasia, which is incredibly expensive to treat. Some breeds are more prone to certain conditions and we want to ensure your pet’s health (and your wallet) are always looked after.
So, in the grand scheme of things, 12 months doesn’t seem that long, does it?
Besides, you can still claim for other events during this time that are unrelated to the pre-existing condition etc. Which means you still have cover for other events and vet bills.
