The expert’s guide to knowing what to do in a car accident - make sure you read this to prepare you for the unexpected

Before we get into this expert guide on handling a bumper bashing like a pro, let’s first define what exactly a bumper bashing is…

A bumper bashing is an accident where a driver hits the rear end of the car in front. In the majority of cases, the car at the back will be at fault because he or she could not stop their vehicle in time to avoid the bumper bashing and it can also be argued that this driver is at fault as they were not keeping the right (and safe) following distance.

10 simple steps to handling a bumper bashing like a pro

When someone drives into the back of your car, you might first get a big fright, and then you may start to feel annoyed, frustrated or angry - these feelings are all normal!

At Oneplan, we don’t believe in making things complicated, in fact, we understand the simple things in life are some of the best things, which is why we have put together this awesome checklist of how to handle a bumper bashing.

The first and unofficial step is to remain calm.

There is an explanation for everything. Before you do anything else, take a deep breath and know that this will sort itself out.

1. Stop. Put on hazards.

As you would with any accident on the road, the first thing you need to do is stop your car and switch on your hazards.

2. Check for injuries

Even if the incident is a minor one, make sure you check that you or anyone in your car is no injured. If someone is hurt, then call for emergency assistance to help you.

3. Move your car if you can

If the accident was a minor one and the damage to the cars is minimal, then you should try to move your car to help prevent a traffic block.

Anyone who stuck behind an accident before will know how annoying it can to have to sit and wait for two drivers to argue it out before moving their cars.

If you cannot move your car as it has been damaged quite badly, then call our Oneplan roadside assist to send a tow truck to help move your car.

4. Check for damages

Walk around your vehicle and check all the damage incurred from the accident. Use your phone to take photos of any damage to keep when claiming from insurance.

5. Become an artist

If you can, sketch how the accident took place and indicate which direction your car was travelling and be sure to include landmarks, road names, robots and intersections.

6. Get the details of the other driver

Getting the details of the other driver might be one of the most important steps - make sure you ask the other driver for the below details

  1. Full names
  2. ID number
  3. Car registration
  4. Home address
  5. Cell phone number - phone their number as they give it to you to ensure their phone rings and they have given you the right number
  6. Their insurance details
  7. The make, colour and model of their car
  8. The date and time of the incident
  9. Details of any eyewitnesses

7. Get the police involved

Both of the parties need to visit the nearest police station within 24 hours of the accident to get a case number.

8. Call your insurer

Call us even if you think the damage done is minor and you do not intend to claim - remember - honesty is our best insurance policy.

The reason why we say you should still inform us of the accident is that even though you think the damage is minimal, there might be more serious damage underneath your car. If you do not adequately address this damage, then you might be putting your safety at risk.

9. Get your car assessed

Depending on how bad the damage done to your car is, then we might ask you to bring your vehicle to an assessment centres where an expert evaluates the damage and quote you for repairs.

10. Claim from insurance

Of course, if you have car insurance with us, then you will know how easy it is to claim. All you have to do is login to the Oneplan App, load your claim and other details such as the case number and photos of the incident.

It’s really that easy.

You could also phone our call centre and one of our friendly team members will walk you through the whole process.

Stay safe on the roads out there and make sure you are covered for the expected, unexpected and everything in between.

Yours in uncomplicated car insurance,
