Can’t afford to see the doctor on your medical aid hospital plan? Health insurance could help with that…
And better yet, a health insurer that pays you BEFORE you see the doctor
First things first….what exactly is health insurance?
Health insurance is kind of like the affordable alternative to medical aid.
It is a form of short term insurance and helps cover you for the costs of hospital care and doctor visits.
What’s the difference between health insurance and medical aid?
This is actually a question I get asked quite often.
If you want a more detailed explanation, then click on this link to take you to a blog post on the topic.
Medical aid and medical insurance are two different products.
Medical aid provides you with in-hospital cover and pays for your treatment according to a specific medical scheme rate.
Health insurance will pay out a set amount for each event such as a hospital stay or doctor visit and had set limits to claim amounts to be paid out.
With health insurance, payment for medical claims is made directly to you. With medical aid, the payment is typically made to the hospital or service provider.
Why it pays to have health insurance with a medical aid hospital plan
If you already have medical aid, then you will know how much it costs you every month for your premum alne. And in some cases when it comes time to claim, you are left having to put in your own money to pay your medical service provider.
In this case, health insurance works wonderfully as a form of gap cover. When your medical aid savings run out then health insurance can help cover the costs.
Then there is the case for those of you who have medical aid, but you only have a hospital plan.
This means that when you need to see the doctor, this cost is your own problem.
Which often results in a number of people avoiding their doctor’s entirely or having to wait until payday.
Health insurance that covers doctor visits and routine care
There are a number of health insurers out there, a quick Google search will tell you that.
But when it comes to health insurance with some of the best benefits, I always recommend Oneplan.
And here’s why…
Oneplan has 4 different health insurance plans you can choose from. Starting at only R365 per month to R1180 per month.
Each of their plans includes doctor visits and routine care such as X-rays and blood tests.
Their most comprehensive plan even includes specialist cover - in fact, you are covered for R2000 per visit, allowing you 3 visits a year!
They also include dental, eye care and maternity cover.
Which sounds pretty great, doesn’t it?
Oh, and did I mention you are also covered for prescription medication?
Of course, you are also covered for hospital and emergency costs, which is where health insurance can act as a form of gap cover when your medical aid falls short.
Health insurance that fronts you with cash before you see the doctor
Okay guys, I’m not sure you are ready for this awesome benefit, because it is pretty life-changing.
Here’s the deal…
A number of health insurers will only pay you out for your claim amount AFTER you have seen the doctor. You then have to use your own money and then fill in the paper work and claim forms in order to wait 14 days to a month to be reimbursed.
But with Oneplan and their nifty Onecard, all you have to do is login to the Oneplan app, load your claim amount and the funds will be transferred into your Onecard within seconds.
You can then use this Onecard to swipe at your doctor’s office.
So, if you already have a medical aid plan which doesn’t cover you for doctor visits, dentistry or optometry, then do some research and see what kind of health insurance plans are out there. Remember, cheaper doesn’t always mean better. Make sure you read your insurance policy and know exactly what you are covered for and what you are not.
Oneplan ensures you understand insurance as well as they do, which is why they include easy to understand policy documents on their website.
