Finding a dream home is like finding the perfect partner, it might take some time, but it’s worth it in the end. Follow these easy hacks to finding the home of your dreams…

Home is where the heart is, that means that you need to find a place you will love, feel comfortable in and want to come home to every day.

1. Make a budget and stick to it

Finding your dream home starts with knowing what you can afford. Get your finances in order before you start. Find out what your credit score and if your bank or a home loan company will pre-approve you for a loan.

Once you know what you can afford and what you can work into your current finances if you had to pay for a bond every month, then you need to make sure you stick to this budget.

The house of your dreams should not mean you have to stress about trying to pay it off every month and you certainly should not sacrifice your happiness and financial freedom for it.

2. Use Facebook

Go on Facebook and join some online community groups to find out more about areas. You can find some great info on here such as security issues, what the community is like and what the area has to offer.

Post any questions these groups you might have. For example, if you are a parent, you might want to know about schools in the area. Maybe you want to find out about local gyms, restaurants or other community activities.

3. Plan for the future

How long do you plan on living in this house? Do you want to start a family in the near future? Find out what the area is like that you are interested in buying in and make sure that the homes in this area are only increasing in value, not decreasing.

You don’t want to find yourself in a situation where you have spent all the time and money on a home that is depreciating and a neighbourhood that is becoming a security risk.

4. Find a home that is close to your work and schools

You might not have the same job forever, but it certainly does make a big difference to live closer to where you work. And if you have kids, have a home that is close to the good schools in your area.

If you are willing to travel a bit further every day for your dream home, then you need to factor in these costs into your monthly budget. As driving more means more fuel and more wear and tear on your car.

5. Make a list of what you want

How many bedrooms do you want? Bathrooms? Do you want a pool? What kind of security are you looking for? Do you want a garage or some extra storage space?

Make a list of everything you want in a home and try to stick to this. Of course, you can’t have everything, but you can certainly try to find a home that has most of what you are after.

6. Keep your options open

You might have an idea of what you want your house to look like or where you want it to be situated, but you never know what different neighbourhoods and houses might offer you. So think outside the box and keep your mind open.

7. Get household insurance

The moment you buy your dream home, you need to make sure you are covered for the unexpected, expected and everything in between. You invest a lot of time, money and resources into a home and theft or fire and see those things disappear in the blink of an eye. That’s why it helps to have home insurance.

Happy house hunting!
