Your home is one of your most valuable and important assets. In being a major financial investment, it’s important to make sure your home is always in good shape.

Even if you are not looking to sell your house right now, you still want to ensure your humble abode’s value does not fade as it ages.

These easy and insightful tips will help in positioning your home as something that is sought after…

1. Don’t forget about the outside

This point might seem silly at first, but so many homeowners spend a great deal of time trying to better and improve the interior of their homes and in doing so, forget about the outside.

You know that old saying “don’t judge a book by its cover?” well, this doesn’t apply when it comes to a home.

First impressions last and if the outside of your home is looking shabby, then people will think that the inside is a reflection of that.

Here’s what you do:

●        Keep walls and edges clean and repainted when need be

●        Fix any wear and tear on windows and doors

2. Trim the hedges

While we are on the subject of your home’s exterior, ensure your garden looks neat and tidy too! An overgrown lawn, untrimmed hedges, out of control vines and the like can all send a potential buyer running for the next house on their list.

Obviously, we don’t all have green fingers (I for one could kill a rose just by looking at it skew), so try to keep it simple.

3. Don’t forget about the most important rooms - the bathrooms and kitchen

Bathrooms and kitchens are incredibly important when it comes to the overall appeal of your home, that’s why you need to make sure they are in tip-top shape!

Peeling walls, old and water damaged cupboards, old shower curtains and other features can all play negatively when estimating the value of your home.

Now, I’m not saying you have to have a complete makeover if your bathrooms and kitchen aren’t up to scratch, but small improvements like changing the handles of cupboards, refurbishing certain areas, retiling, repainting and replacing taps can make a huge difference.

Any old-school looking finishes like baths, tiles and showers should be replaced.

4. Beef up your security

By having an alarm system installed, burglar bars, an electric fence and solid wall around your property - you are significantly increasing its value.

And not only that, the safer your house is, the less of a security risk it is seen as, and the less you pay in household insurance. Sounds great, right?

When someone walks into a home, they want to feel safe and secure, by beefing up your security, you could be making a huge difference to your home’s value and your own safety.

5. Think about going green

Eco-friendly installations such as solar power (even just a solar powered geyser) can improve the popularity of your home. A borehole is also a great idea or a form of greywater usage and filtration system.

The fact of the matter is that we live in a country where power and water cuts are a reality, having some eco-friendly solutions can go a long way.
