How to protect your home from break-ins
Beef up your security
The first step you need to take is to improve your security.
The benefit of this is two-fold. Firstly, your home and your belongings (as well as your loved ones) will be protected and robbers are less likely to break into a secure home. Secondly, by improving your home security this will automatically lower your home insurance premium as your house as a lower risk of burglary.
1. Install burglar bars on all opening windows
As well as security gates on all doors.
2. Security beams
You need to install beams that cover the area outside of your home and inside of your home. This will serve as an early warning system to alert you of any criminals breaking in.
3. Link your security system with an armed response team
It’s a good idea to link your home’s security system with an armed response team. You can also have a panic button that automatically alerts this team.
These are becoming more affordable than ever and more South Africans are choosing to install these systems into their homes.
These cameras offer an easy and reliable way for you to keep an eye on your home, you can also access this footage using a smartphone app.
5. Electric fence
This feature offers an additional security feature and acts as a barrier. Make sure you get a professional to install and certify this fence and check it for any vulnerable spots where criminals can bypass the fence.
Make sure your home and valuable assets are covered
The second thing you need to do after improving your home’s security is to ensure you have household and car insurance in place to protect you from unexpected costs associated with robbery.
Burglary is stressful enough as it is, you don’t want to have to stress about the costs of replacing a stolen car or belongings on top of the trauma of a robbery.
What happens when someone breaks into your home and steals your brand new TV? Or worse, uses your car as a getaway vehicle to help transport your TV? Do you have the cash lying around to replace your TV and your car? And let’s be honest, who has that kind of cash to spare in any case?
This is why it pays to have household and car insurance in place. And better yet, insurance that changes as life does.
